Charles Cole Emergency Department to Initiate After Hours Lockdown
July 10, 2008
Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will initiate an after hours lockdown of the emergency department during designated night hours., beginning August 4, as a safety precaution for its patients, visitors, and staff.
Those visiting the ED may use conveniently located telephones which will ring directly to emergency department staff. ED staff will be prepared for Emergency Medical Services vehicles on arrival. Video will also be used to track incoming visitors.
“Installation of the new security system for the Emergency Department was made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Office of Public Health Preparedness, the Federal Office of Homeland Security and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). We’re very pleased to be able to provide this added protection for our patients, visitors and staff,” said CCMH safety officer Lonnie Bunch.
Emily Myers, RN, noted that the lockdown can also be initiated during an emergency situation such as major disaster, bomb threat, abduction, or civil disturbance. Although the lockdown would control those entering the hospital, it will not prevent people from exiting, she said.
“As we continue to respond to the needs of the community we serve, this capability will allow us to provide enhanced safety controls if and when they might be needed,” said CCMH chief executive nurse Cindi Hardesty.
For more information, contact Myers at 814/274-9300, ext. 1187.
