Volunteer Services - Health Care Career Awareness

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital has a strong commitment to increase awareness of the career opportunities available in health care.

Many people are not aware of the breadth of careers that make a hospital run smoothly. Some people bring to mind doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and x-ray technologists but there many other job classifications within clinical and non-clinical departments throughout the hospital.

Some careers have on-the-job training and others have certification requirements or advanced education.

If you are choosing a career for the first time or contemplating a career change, please contact Netra Baker, Director of Staff Development at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital by calling (814) 274-5246 or via e-mail: netra.baker@charlescolehospital.com. Ms. Baker will be happy to talk with you, set up a tour of the hospital, job shadowing experiences and provide you with information about various educational opportunities and requirements.

SCHOOL TO WORK PROGRAM

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital has formed initial partnerships with the five school districts in Potter County to offer qualified high school juniors and seniors opportunities to participate in a structured program to explore
health care careers. This program assists students in the process of making informed career choices. School To Work includes structured programs exploring all of the different jobs that are needed to make a hospital function effectively.

Classes on professional conduct and dress, confidentiality, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), communication skills, listening skills and medical terminology are among the educational offerings that students may choose.

Areas of identified interest are then incorporated into a job shadowing plan that puts the student into the day-to-day job setting. The student takes the information gained during these experiences to further refine areas of job interest for intensive job experience. Many of these students will be able to apprentice with experienced staff providing a huge advantage when they continue their education after high school.

Each participant is provided counseling and one-on-one attention to guide them toward a successful career match.
